Wake up to JOY
THIS WEEK: What Gets You Up in the Morning?
Do what makes you happy AND pursue what lights you up!
When was the last time you woke up with joy? With a sense of eager anticipation for what the day will bring?
If you’re not sure, you’re not alone.
Jobs, care taking and the never ending do-list can weigh down even the most positive and energetic person.
Let’s take a lesson from the Japanese and cultivate a little "ikigai" in our lives.
"Ikigai" is Japanese concept that has been around for thousands of years that contends that one’s physical well being is entirely dependent on their mental and emotional well being AND having a sense of purpose in life.
It’s amazing, our body really does keep score.
And Japanese psychologist Michiko Kumano defines ikigai as "a state of well being that arises from devotion to activities one enjoys, which also brings a sense of fulfillment."
That’s the type of well being we could all benefit from!
And note, this is NOT the same thing as a life that merely brings pleasure.
It is deeper than that.
Going out to dinner can bring you pleasure. And for many, making a lot of money can too.
Ikigai is about doing the things that bring you pleasure AND cultivating a sense of purpose and fulfillment in your life.
It’s about a life well lived.
Do what makes you happy AND pursue what lights you up. This is the recipe for waking up to joy.
WRITING & REFLECTION:
Do more of what makes you happy. What is that for you?
Pursue what lights you up. What is it and why is it important to you?
